Work Commences on RSV Nuyina Barges

Tayor Bros has been selected to construct two high-powered Antarctic landing barges for Australia’s new icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina, which is currently being constructed in Romania at the Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding yard.

The barges have been designed to carry 45.5 tonne trucks from ship to shore, giving the Nuyina greater capability for unloading and reloading cargo and research equipment.

“Taylor Bros was a natural choice for this contract, having delivered a number of projects to the AAD previously,” said Roland Briene, Damen area director Asia Pacific. “Tasmania in general has an excellent reputation for being one of the most effective manufacturing, supply and support bases for Antarctic research.”

Construction of the barges are set to be completed in 2020 when the RSV Nuyina enters service, replacing the current vessel, the Aurora Australis.
