Taylor Bros Marine Pty Ltd is a fourth-generation family business headquartered on the foreshore of the Derwent River in Hobart, the southernmost port in Australia. Established in 1936, Taylor Bros has grown from building timber yachts and small coastal and river craft to a multi-discipline engineering company with a highly skilled workforce. Predominately a marine engineering company, Taylor Bros capabilities include project management, engineering, design, fabrication, electrical, mechanical, and logistic support services. These capabilities allow Taylor Bros to provide a wide range of services to Defence, offshore oil and gas, Antarctic and marine science and the general marine industry throughout Australia and overseas.
Taylor Bros has become a highly mobile, project management specialist in outfit services to the marine industry and has developed a prefabrication approach to projects for quality demanding industries like Defence, oil and gas, marine science and other demanding maritime industries. Prefabrication is advantageous as it increases the amount of work conducted at Taylor Bros’ facilities and reduces the amount of fabrication required at the shipyard during production, increasing productivity, compressing the schedule, achieving customers’ specified quality service and reducing cost.
Taylor Bros has been involved in projects for both the Australian (RAN) and New Zealand (RNZN) Navies for more than 40 years. This began with being contracted to maintain HMAS Huon in 1982 and supporting the United States Navy and RAN vessels visiting the Port of Hobart through the 80s, 90s. It continued into the 21st century, with Taylor Bros completing prefabrication and installation work on Project Protector for the RNZN between 2004 and 2008.
In 2009, Taylor Bros were awarded a contract for outfit accommodation design, supply, manufacturing and installation services to the RAN’s Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project.
In 2012, Taylor Bros was awarded contracts to supply and install furniture and equipment to BAE Systems for Zone 8 and the Medical Spaces of the RAN’s Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Ships.
In 2015, Taylor Bros designed, supplied and installed crew accommodation equipment during the refit of HMAS Success.
In 2017, Taylor Bros provided Galley, Laundry and Medical equipment to the Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) project.
In 2018, Taylor Bros signed a contract with Luerssen to provide accommodation and insulation design, manufacturing and installation for 12 Arafura class OPVs. Although this project was reduced from 12 to 6 ships in 2024, Taylor Bros continue to meet scheduled production requirements.
In 2019, Taylor Bros started works on HMAS Choules including a major refit of the Galley and Laundry, Boat Davit replacement, Ballast Water Treatment and Medical Area refit.
In 2022, Taylor Bros began supporting BAE with accommodation outfit scope on the Hunter Class Frigate Program. This has also extended to assisting with production on the prototype blocks and a Targeted Task to manufacture certified metal joiner bulkhead and ceiling panels and non-watertight doors.
Taylor Bros is now providing support to the DDGs, LHDs, AORs, OPVs, Collins Submarines and HMAS Choules during their in-service phase. Taylor Bros is a member of the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP).
Taylor Bros mobile workforce maintain current OPITO approved BOSIET Certificates and MSIC Cards. Taylor Bros is active in the offshore oil and gas industry providing outfit accommodation and structural fabrication services. This industry requires high standards of safety in both design and manufacture and certification of supplies to class rules. Oil and gas projects are required to be delivered to tight schedules, dependent on production, weather and the availability of support vessels to complete. Taylor Bros excels at providing products and services that meet these high demands. Customers include Maersk Drilling, Stena Drilling, Diamond Offshore, Modec Management Services, Songa Offshore, Origin Energy, Apache Energy, BHP, Trelleborg and Fitzroy Engineering.
Taylor Bros have been contractors to the Australian Antarctic Division, CSIRO and P&O Maritime for 40 years providing maintenance and upgrades to Australian and international supply and research vessels, rebuilding main engines, gearboxes, cranes, mechanical systems, and installing accommodation and research equipment during layup periods. Taylor Bros has built two landing barges and six science labs for the new Ice Breaker RSV Nuyina and are manufacturing Overland Traverse and Inland Station Vans for the AAD. Taylor Bros have developed innovative Modular accommodation solutions to withstand the harsh marine and artic environments.
Geographical location has not limited Taylor Bros areas of operation, with projects undertaken throughout Australia, South East Asia south west pacific countries and New Zealand including offshore support services, maintenance, refit and repair, equipment installation, accommodation units, Defence and Antarctic projects. Taylor Bros boasts experienced tradesmen that provide the capability to undertake a wide variety of projects within short periods. Over the lifetime of the business, Taylor Bros has demonstrated an ability to be involved in many fields of work and has undertaken many exciting projects. Taylor Bros well equipped and strategically located facilities and its entrepreneurial style of management provide a skilled, adaptable and dedicated capability. Taylor Bros utilises a Business Management System that has been certified as a Quality Management System to ISO 9001:2016.
